WISDOM IN ACTION
Text: 1 Corinthians 3:19 Proverbs 3:5-6
By: Whiskey, Joshua
“Will I trust what makes sense to the world, or will I trust what God says?”
The challenge is that worldly wisdom often appears attractive, intelligent, modern, and practical, while God’s wisdom sometimes appears slow, difficult, and even foolish. Yet history, Scripture, and experience repeatedly prove that God’s wisdom always stands when human wisdom fails.
INTRODUCTION
We are living in one of the most educated generations in history. People can learn almost anything from the internet. Artificial Intelligence can answer questions in seconds. Social media influencers shape opinions.
Experts are everywhere.
Yet despite all this knowledge:
Depression is increasing.
Families are breaking apart.
Morality is declining.
Many people feel empty.
The problem is that knowledge is not the same as wisdom. A person can know many things and still destroy his life. The world teaches people how to make money, gain followers, and become famous. God teaches people how to live, how to die, and how to spend eternity with Him. That is the difference between worldly wisdom and God’s wisdom.
WHAT IS WORLDLY WISDOM?
1 Corinthians 3:19 “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” Worldly wisdom is any thinking, philosophy, or system that excludes God from decision-making. It is not merely intelligence. A person can have a PhD and still possess worldly wisdom.
Worldly wisdom says:
Trust yourself.
Follow your heart.
Do what makes you happy.
Success is measured by wealth.
Truth is relative.
God’s wisdom says:
Trust God.
Guard your heart.
Obey God.
Success is faithfulness.
Truth comes from God.
THE ORIGIN OF WORLDLY WISDOM
The first appearance of worldly wisdom occurred in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 3:1-6 Satan approached Eve. Notice his strategy; He did not deny God’s existence. He challenged God’s wisdom. The serpent essentially said: “God’s way is holding you back.” “There’s a better way.” “Think for yourself.” Eve exchanged God’s wisdom for human reasoning. The result was sin, suffering, and death. The same temptation exists today.
Young people hear: “Everybody is doing it.” “You only live once.” “Enjoy your life now.” Older people hear: “You’ve worked hard enough.”
“You don’t need God as much anymore.” “Depend on your experience.”
The devil’s method has not changed.
WHAT IS GODLY WISDOM?
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Godly wisdom is seeing life from God’s perspective. It is not merely knowing Scripture. It is applying God’s truth to daily living. Godly wisdom asks: What does God say? What pleases God? What honors God? What leads to eternity?
MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WORLDLY WISDOM AND GOD’S WISDOM
- THE WORLD TRUSTS HUMAN REASONING; GOD CALLS FOR FAITH
Proverbs 3:5 The world says: “If I cannot understand it, I won’t believe it”. God says: “Trust Me even when you don’t understand.” Example: Noah God told Noah to build an ark. Human wisdom said: “This is ridiculous.” God’s wisdom said: “Build.” Noah obeyed. The flood came. Human wisdom drowned. God’s wisdom floated. Lesson Faith does not mean ignoring facts. Faith means trusting God’s truth above human limitations.
- THE WORLD EXALTS SELF; GOD EXALTS HUMILITY
James 4:6 The world promotes: Self-glory Self-promotion Self-centeredness Social media ften encourages people to seek validation from strangers. Many people’s worth is now measured by: Likes Followers Popularity God’s wisdom teaches: Humility. Example: Jesus Christ The Creator washed the feet of His disciples. John 13:1-17 The King became a servant. That is God’s wisdom.
- THE WORLD VALUES TEMPORARY SUCCESS; GOD VALUES ETERNAL SUCCESS
Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Many people spend: 40 years building careers 20 years building houses But spend little time preparing for eternity. Real Historical Example John D. Rockefeller, one of the richest men in history, reportedly said: “I have made many millions, but they have brought me no happiness.” Money solved many problems but could not satisfy the soul. Lesson A successful life without God is ultimately a failed life.
HOW DIFFERENT GENERATIONS FACE THIS BATTLE
THE YOUTH (16-35) The temptation: Social media pressure Sexual immorality Materialism Identity confusion Peer pressure Worldly wisdom says: “Do whatever feels right.” God says: Ecclesiastes 12:1 “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.” Example: Joseph Everyone around Joseph would have considered Potiphar’s wife an opportunity. God’s wisdom saw danger. Joseph fled. The world laughed. God promoted him. Application Many youths are asking: Which career? Which relationship? Which lifestyle? The safest answer is: “What does God want?” not “What is trending?”
THE MIDDLE-AGED ADULTS (35-60)
The temptation: Trusting experience over Scripture Career obsession Financial anxiety Many people begin depending more on experience than God. Example: Abraham At 75 years old, God told him to leave everything familiar. Human wisdom would stay. Faith obeyed. God blessed. Lesson Experience is valuable. But experience must never replace God’s Word.
THE ELDERLY (60-75+)
The temptation: Spiritual complacency Living on past achievements Thinking growth is for younger people Psalm 92:14 “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age.” God never retires is servants. Example: Moses Moses was 80 years old when God called him. Example: Caleb At 85 years old, Caleb still wanted mountains to conquer. Joshua 14:10-12 Lesson The elderly are not spectators. They are examples. The younger generation needs their wisdom and faith.
CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD’S WISDOM
James 3:17 God’s wisdom is: Pure It seeks holiness. Peaceable It promotes peace. Gentle It treats others with kindness. Easy to Be Entreated It listens and learns. Full of Mercy It forgives. Without Partiality It is fair. Without Hypocrisy It is genuine. Ask the class: “Does social media encourage these qualities?” Often the answer is no. THE TITANIC When the RMS Titanic was launched in 1912, many considered it virtually unsinkable. Human engineering was celebrated. Human confidence was high. Yet on its first voyage, it sank after striking an iceberg. Over 1,500 people died. The lesson is not that technology is bad. The lesson is that human confidence without humility is dangerous. Human wisdom often overestimates itself. God’s wisdom recognizes human limitations. Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction.”
WHY PEOPLE REJECT GOD’S WISDOM
It Requires Submission People prefer control. It Requires Patience People want instant results. It Requires Faith People want visible proof. It Exposes Sin People prefer comfort over repentance.
HOW TO DEVELOP GOD’S WISDOM
- Fear God Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” Wisdom starts with reverence.
- Study God’s Word Daily Psalm 119:105 The Bible illuminates life’s path.
- Pray for Wisdom James 1:5 God gives wisdom generously.
- Associate with Wise Christians Proverbs 13:20 Company shapes character.
- Obey What You Already Know Wisdom grows through obedience. Knowledge without obedience produces pride
One of the greatest deceptions of our generation is believing that because we have more information, we have more wisdom. Never in history have people had so much information in their pockets and yet struggled so much to find purpose. A smartphone can connect you to the world. Only God can connect you to eternity. Artificial Intelligence can answer questions. Only God can answer the deepest needs of the soul. The world can teach you how to make a living. God teaches you how to live. The world can make you popular. God can make you holy. The world can prepare you for retirement. God prepares you for eternity.
CONCLUSION
1 Corinthians 3:19 “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” Every generation must make a choice: Will I trust the changing opinions of men? Or will I trust the unchanging wisdom of God? The wisdom of this world may make a person successful for a few years. The wisdom of God prepares a person for time and eternity. When worldly wisdom and God’s wisdom stand in opposition, the Christian must always choose God. Because at the end of life, the question will not be: “Were you accepted by the world?” The question will be: “Were you faithful to God?”
