Text: Proverb 3:5-6
By: Odafe, Obus
“Lean on Me” is a song written by Bill Withers. Bill Withers grew up in Slab Fork, West Virginia, a small coal-mining town in the United States. In that kind of community, work was hard. Resources were limited, people survived by supporting one another. Life was not always easy, and neighbours depended on neighbours because they had to survive together.
- When someone is sick, neighbours showed up to support.
- When someone struggled, others helped.
- When times are hard, people stood together.
These early life experiences became the inspiration behind the song “Lean on Me” with the powerful message of unity and encouragement.
The song teaches that:
- Everyone faces difficult moments.
- No one is meant to carry burdens alone.
- We should support and help one another
What Does “Lean on Me” Mean?
- To depend on
- To rely on for support
- To rest your weight on something stronger than yourself
Spiritually, it means depending on God when life becomes too heavy to carry alone
Text Proverb 3:5-6
“5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And lean not on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
This scripture clearly affirms the importance of leaning on God in a world that constantly encourages self-reliance and personal control.
God is reminding us of the important not to lean only on our:
- Wisdom
- Understanding
- Strength
- Connections
- Knowledge
- Hard work
- Experience
- Intelligence
- Qualifications
- Confidence
- Finance
- Health
- Expertise
OR
- Lean on Him sometimes.
- Lean on Him only when trouble comes.
- Lean on Him only when doors close.
- Lean on Him only when we are in need.
Some will say I have made it this far without God, why do I need to lean on Him? The question is not how far you have come, but how far can you go?
The strongest person has a breaking point. The wisest person has blind spots.
The richest person cannot control tomorrow.
It is important to lean on Him for:
- Divine direction
- Wisdom and guidance
- Strength and growth
- Peace and love
- Knowledge
- Understanding
- Sustenance
- Protection
- Blessing
- Trust
- Support
CONCLUSION
Leaning on God is not weakness. It is the highest expression of faith, acknowledging that when our strength fails, His strength is more than enough to carry what we cannot. Therefore, let us lean on Him in every situation, knowing that He will guide our path and sustain us through all things.
GOD BLESS US IN JESUS NAME.
