INTRODUCTION

Peace is a reality few persons experience these days. But in the midst of our chaotic world, God offers a peace that goes far beyond human understanding.

This hope of Peace lies at the heart of the story of the Bible. Because of Adam and Eve’s rebellion in the garden of Eden, all of us are born in need of a restored relationship with our Creator.

But God has addressed this relationship problem. He promised to send someone who would offer salvation to everyone; this person is Jesus                          (John 1:29).

By faith we identify and trust in Jesus’ offer of himself for our sins so we can experience salvation and as a result peace with God.

But daily events threaten this peace; Anger, jealousy, stress, relationships, addiction, poverty, health issues etc…. there’s another kind of peace Jesus offers — the Peace of God.

THE SOURCE OF PEACE

The peace of the world comes from external circumstances.

It is based on:

  • Financial security
  • Political stability
  • Good health
  • Absence of conflict

It is temporary and fragile. It is easily disturbed by:

  • Bad news
  • Economic downturns
  • Relationship breakdowns
  • War or crisis

God’s Peace:

  • Comes from a relationship with God.
  • Rooted in reconciliation through Christ (Romans 5:1).
  • Independent of circumstances.
    Sustained by faith and trust.

THE NATURE OF BOTH KINDS OF PEACE

The World’s Peace

The peace the world offers is fundamentally flawed.

It may look attractive on the surface, but it lacks depth and permanence. They are:

  • Superficial
  • Emotional
  • Artificial
    Priced (Can be purchased)

God’s Peace

Philippians 4:6–7: “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds…”

Characteristics:

  • Surpasses human reasoning
  • Guards the heart like a soldier protects a city
  • Exists even during suffering

Examples of God’s Peace:

  • Jesus asleep during the storm (Mark 4:39)
  • Paul and Silas singing in prison (Acts 16:25)

DURATION AND STABILITY

Worldly Peace

  • Temporary
  • Conditional
  • Dependent on “if” statements (“If I get the job… if the test is negative… if the money comes…”)

God’s Peace

  • Eternal in scope — It does not expire when situations shift.

God’s peace sustains believers in every season and stretches beyond this life into eternity.

  • Anchored in heaven, not earth — Its source is divine, not circumstantial.

Storms may rage on earth, yet the soul remains steady because its anchor is above.

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You…” — Isaiah 26:3

  • Strengthened by prayer, obedience, and faith — God’s peace grows deeper as we walk closely with Him.

It flourishes where there is trust, surrender, and consistent communion.

THE COST OF PEACE

World’s Peace

  • Often achieved through compromise
  • May require moral concession
  • Sometimes suppresses truth to avoid conflict

God’s Peace

  • Cost the blood of Christ
  • Requires total surrender to God
  • Sometimes brings persecution — yet inner calm remains

The world’s peace depends on circumstances being right; God’s peace depends on Christ being present.

WHAT GOD’S PEACE IS NOT

  1. God’s peace does not forbid healthy enjoyment of life Ecclesiastes 3:12–13, 1Timothy 6:17
  2. God’s peace does not require social withdrawal Hebrews 10:24–25
  3. God’s peace does not oppose diligence or success Colossians 3:23–24, Proverbs 22:29

CONCLUSION

Christians Must Know and Examine:

  • Where they are seeking peace
  • Whether they are truly reconciled to God
  • If they are allowing anxiety to replace faith
  • Know that real peace is found in Christ alone.
  • It is available to obedient believers.

“Anxiety grows where faith is neglected, but the soul that rests in Christ discovers a peace the world cannot steal.”
