Introduction

The conscience is a God-given moral awareness that helps us distinguish between right and wrong. This indicates that the conscience acts as a moral compass, guiding individuals to discern right from wrong.

God has given every person a conscience to help distinguish between right and wrong. (Rom 2 vs 14 – 15).

A guilty conscience is the inner feeling of sorrow, fear, shame, regret, pain or conviction that comes when we know we have done something wrong. It is God’s way of alerting us that our actions, words, or thoughts are not pleasing to Him.

Causes of Guilt.

A guilt is revealed through a person’s words, actions, emotions, and behaviour after committing a wrong.

  1. Unconfessed Sin: When sin is hidden instead of confession and repentance, the guilt remains and become heavier over time because the conscience continues to remind us that something is wrong.
  1. Hurting Others: Offending, deceiving, or treating others unjustly can lead to guilt.
  1. Hypocrisy: Living differently in public than in private creates inner conflict.
  1. Unforgiveness: Refusing to forgive others can produce guilt and hinder fellowship with God.
  1. Failure to Do What Is Right: Guilt can arise not only from wrong actions but also from neglecting our responsibilities.

  1. Dishonesty and Lack of Integrity: Living without truthfulness and moral uprightness lead to guilt because dishonesty destroys trust and it troubles the conscience.

Effects of Guilty Conscience

A guilty conscience affects a person’s emotions, relationships and spiritual life.

CASE STUDY: Joseph Brothers (Genesis 42:21–22)

This passage records the moment Joseph’s brothers connected their present suffering with their past sin against Joseph bringing fear and anxiety because of their guilty conscience.

  1. Fear: A guilty person often express fear of being exposed or punished (Gen. 43 vs 18)
  1. Anxiety: A guilty person always feels unease and tense or overwhelm of what may happen. (Gen. 43 vs 19 – 23).
  1. Making Excuses: A guilty conscience often causes people to make excuses or blame others rather than take responsibility for their action and admitting their wrongdoing
  1. Disturbs Inner Peace: A guilty conscience disturbs the mind and heart, making it difficult for a person to enjoy peace and joy.
  1. Affects spiritual life: Unresolved guilt causes people to distance from God.
  1. Shame and Regret: A guilty person feels sorrowful and embarrassed because of past sin or wrong.
  1. Emotional and Physical Stress: Unresolved guilt may lead to sleeplessness, stress, sadness, loss of appetite, or fatigue.
  1. Broken Relationships: Unresolved guilt can strained family relationships.

Key Lesson: Years may pass, but a guilty conscience remains until it is dealt with. Only repentance and God’s forgiveness can erase guilty conscience.

Conclusion

Rather than ignoring or hiding our guilt, we should admit our wrong,  ask God for forgiveness and do our best to correct our wrongs.
