Definition

Addiction is the repeated involvement with a substance or an activity, despite the substantial harm it causes, because that involvement was (and may continue to be) pleasurable and/or valuable.

Causes of Addiction

1.Genetics/Brain function

2.Poor coping skills with stress/boredom

3.Underlying anxiety or depression

4.Negative thinking such as all-for-nothing approach to life

5.Environment

6.Peer pressure

7.To enhance performance

8.Curiosity

Stages of Addiction

  1. Habitual Stage:The individual likes the effects of the substance/activity they are addicted to, and continues  to use them more regularly
  2. Dependency Stage:The individual continues to use the substance or involve in the activity because his living depends on it.

SYMPTOMS OF ADDICTION

CRAVINGS

Feeling a constant craving for the substance or activity addicted to

TOLERANCE

Needing more of the substance or indulging in more of the activity in order to get the same sense of euphoria that you once experienced with a smaller amount

ERRATIC BEHAVIOR

Getting complains from family and friends that your behavior is erratic or odd

WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS

These signs can include severe shaking, nausea, anxiety, vomiting and sweating
