Introduction

Brethren, our sermon today is a warning to every one of us, who is called out from the world through the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by baptism into his body (the church) called to be Christians, (1 Pet. 2:9-10) to “be careful and watchful” as we run the race of eternal life. For it is possible for a falling away for those who have come to the knowledge of the truth.

It is only those who run the race to the end will win the crown. We must therefore realize that there are so many obstacles that can disqualify one from wining the prize (1 Cor. 9:24).

OUR TEXT IS TAKEN FROM

1 CORINTHIANS.10: 1 – 13

10 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”   8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. NKJV

Today, we are going to consider two critical areas of this sermon.

  1. The challenges that can disqualify one from getting the goal.
  2. What we must do to earn us the goal of eternal salvation with God.
  3. Conclusion

THE CHALLENGES THAT CAN DISQUALIFY ONE FROM GETTING THE GOAL

Let us examine the characteristics of those who are liable for disqualification.

The attraction of the world

Lust

Idolatry

Immorality

Grumbling etc.

CASE STUDY 2:

Examples of the fall of some great ministers and brethren in the church in our time.

AREAS OF CAUTION

  1. LUST FOR SEXTUAL SIN
  2. GREED
  3. UNBELIEF

BRETHREN, TAKE HEED LEST YOU FALL – HEB. 6.4 – 6

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God – HEB.10:31.

WHAT WE MUST DO TO EARN US THE GOAL OF ETERNAL SALVATION WITH GOD.

Brethren, it is important to note that, the Christian life is likened to a race. The way we live our lives is important because Heaven is at stake in how we run this race. The way we run this race will determine if we are going to make it to a successful end or lost out. It is on this basis, we must take the following steps to achieve our desired goal.

STEP 1:

WE MUST LOVE AND TRUST GOD

Matt 22:37-38

Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’   38 This is the first and great commandment.

John 4:24-25

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

STEP 2:

WE MUST HOLD UNTO OUR FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS

Heb 12:2

2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. NKJV

STEP 3 :

1 Thess 5:17

pray without ceasing,

Matt 26:41

41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” NKJV

STEP 4:

WE MUST FLEE FROM EVIL

1 Thess. 5:22

Abstain from every form of evil. NKJV

STEP 5:

WE MUST NOT DEFILE OURSELVES WITH WORLDLY PLEASURES

1 John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. NKJV

STEP 6:

FLEE FROM SEXUAL SIN

1 Cor 6:18-20

18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. NKJV

CONCLUSION

Brethren, the sermon before us today is a warning. Remember that God will bring every secret thing to Judgment at the last day.

Matt 16:26

For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?  NKJV

MAY GOD BLESS HIS WORD IN JESUS NAME AMEN
