Blessing: it is something that you have of something that happens which is good because it helps to improve your life or makes you happy. It is also defined as god’s help or protection.

Joy: This is a feeling of great happiness, gladness, pleasure or rejoicing.

Introduction: The above passage was an attestation made by Laban in respect of Israel being a source of blessing and joy to him while the latter was serving for his daughter during his exile. Therefore, Laban had made a great confirmation about the large increase of his livestock courtesy of Israel’s diligence.

In the same way, the scripture has encouraged Christians not to be weary of doing good works to serve as source of blessing and joy to others irrespective of background of the opportunity abounds – Galatians 6:9-10. Undoubtedly, we become source of blessing and joy to brethren and other people alike when their compelling needs are met whether physically or spiritually – Galatians 6:1-2. Nobody can be said to be fully self-sufficient, lacking nothing, in the true sense of it in life. Trying to help others in need may often prompt or attract God to bless you of a particular need you may have – 2 Kings 4:16-17. However, the greatest blessing and joy you can render someone is salvation through preaching Christ to them continually. The people which sat in darkness saw a great light – 2 Timothy 4:2, Matthew 4:16, that was what Philip had done in the city of Samaria, preaching the gospel of Christ and so many people got baptised – Acts 8:8, 12-13, 39.

SOME PRINCIPLES TO NOTE IN BLESSING OTHERS

There are certain principles guiding the act of benevolence to others:

  1. It is a scriptural command – Galatians 6:9, 1 Corinthians 16:1-2.
  2. True generosity is good when it expects nothing in return – 2 Kings 4:13.
  3. Do not grumble or grudge during and after your good deed – 2 Corinthians 9:7.
  4. Do not blow your own trumpet after doing a good deed – Matthew 6:2.
  5. Do not withhold your alms for fear of diminishing returns – Proverbs 11:24-25, 1 Corinthians 9:8.
  6. Do not always be asked before you do any good deeds – Luke 10:33.
  7. Generosity is not sharing from abundance, it is sharing from what is available.

SOME BIBLE CHARACTERS WHO DEMONSTRATED THIS INITIATIVE

There were so many bible characters who displayed this initiative some of whom are hereby mentioned:

  • Esther: She delivered her kindred the Jews from destruction – Esther 4:16, 7:10.
  • Ruth: She eventually become a source of blessing and joy to Naomi – Ruth 4:13.
  • Elisha: He was a source of blessing and joy to the Shunamite woman and Naaman – 2 Kings 4:15-17, 5:1,14.
  • Philip: He preached the gospel of Christ to the people, and many got baptised – Acts 8:8, 12-13, 39.

BENEFITS

  • Physical prosperity may be one of the gains – Proverbs 11:25.
  • Personal fulfilment is attained
  • Protection against seen and unseen battles every passing day.
  • Salvation of one’s soul if assured – John 14:1-3.

CONCLUSION

Every day is an opportunity, what you can accomplish today, do, you may never have an opportunity again. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance – Colossians 3:23-24.
