Text: 2 SAMUEL 24:24
By: Adeoye, Emmanuel (Evang.)
The phrase “I will not give to God that which cost me nothing” comes from 2 Samuel 24:24 in the Bible, where King David refuses a free offering from Araunah, insisting on paying for the oxen and threshing floor to make a sacrifice that truly honors God and reflects his own commitment, emphasizing that genuine worship and devotion require meaningful personal sacrifice, effort, and cost.
SACRIFICE IS ESSENTIAL:
TRUE WORSHIP ISN’T JUST ABOUT GIVING SOMETHING EASY; it’s about giving something that requires effort, discomfort, or personal loss (time, comfort, resources).
HONORING GOD:
OFFERING SOMETHING VALUABLE, SOMETHING THAT “COSTS” you, shows greater respect and acknowledgment of God’s worthiness.
PERSONAL CONSECRATION:
IT MEANS OFFERING YOUR BEST SELF, DILIGENT preparation in ministry, prayer, and prioritizing God’s will over personal convenience.
OVERCOMING PRIDE:
David’s context involved a census that showed his pride in his army; this act of costly sacrifice corrected his spirit and acknowledged God’s sovereignty
EXAMPLES OF WHAT IT MIGHT COST TODAY:
TIME:
Giving up leisure for service or prayer.
COMFORT:
Sacrificing personal ease for ministry or obedience.
RESOURCES:
Giving beyond what’s easy, potentially impacting your own budget.
PRIORITIES:
Letting go of things you value to follow God.
