The aim of our discussion this morning is to encourage us on how we ought to conduct ourselves as Christians. We have been opportune to receive from the Lord weekly lessons that will shape our life in achieving the goal of salvation when our work here on earth is done if only we so walk with them. Our words of encouragement is from the book of Colossians 2:6–
6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him. NKJ
The above letter was written to the brethren in Colossae. This were a people with firm faith in Jesus who needed to grow in him. To avoid and to survive the crisis of religious errors due to false teachers that deceives believers and destroy their saving faith hence the appeal from Apostle Paul and this same letter is still relevant to us (Christians) due to the rapid increase of denominationalism.
Apostle Paul began this letter with a word of exhortation or encouragement- as you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so “walk with Him”.
Paul was simply saying “keep on walking in Him”. Walk here is figuratively used by the apostle signifying the whole round activities of the individual life of the believer. See 1 Corinthians 7:17-But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so i ordain in all the churches. NKJ
That is to continue to progress and grow in Christ. (The question is put before each one of us; Are u growing since you started this walk with Him)?
As Christians, one must walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4– 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Distraction will set in because we are not immune to them. In our day to day life, we get sidetracked from what we have set out to achieved and this can also happen spiritually.
As Christians we need to keep moving, keep walking or get sidetracked spiritually from what is important. That is “Practice what we preach”. At baptism, we are said to be receiving Jesus Christ and at such Paul is encouraging us through this letter to live like it. Be faithful to that commitment. Let your daily life give evidence that Jesus directs your decisions and your conduct. Day in-day out keep walking with or behind Jesus following Him the way He leads you. And for us to be able to keep on walking in him, Paul outlined the following to aid our walk with Christ in verse 7 of our text.
- Be Rooted In Him. The metaphor used here by Paul is the tree. That is, we should be firmly planted in Christ. (To become settled or established and stable in one’s life style. Paul assumes we are already rooted in Christ. Take note tree don’t move around in your compound. When you wake in the morning, it is exactly where you left them the night before. The idea is of stability in Christ come rain come shine. There is no sabbatical or maternal leave in Christ.
- Be Built Up In Him. Built is another metaphor used by Paul signifying to “build upon” this literally means to develop and grow. It is expected that the Christian will not remain a babe but will grow onto maturity. This speaks of continuous development and progress in our walk with Christ. Unlike the physical project that comes to an end after completion, ours is a continuous project. It is expected of the Christian to keep building, always remodeling the temple of our lives to look more and more of our savior. The Christian does not graduate but will leave this earth building-1 Corinthians 3:10, 12, 14, 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation withgold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. It is the duty of every believer to build themselves up as they have receive the truth-Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. See also II Peter 1:5-8, Eph 2:20
- Established In Your Faith. To establish is to confirm your faith and remain in it. It is expected of the Christian to stand firm in the faith as he or she progress and not abandon it and accept any speculative vagaries. 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. Paul is telling the brethren to stand firm and not deviate from the faith in Christ. The faith here refers to the truth we have been taught about Jesus-2 Corinthians 1:21 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is
- Lastly Abounding in it with Thanksgiving. Abound means to be abundant or plentiful. That is existing in abundance. While thanksgiving means “gratitude” thankfulness. Apostle Paul went further here in urging the brethren to live daily praising and walking so as to please God, appreciating Him and thanking Him. The church today can do the same. Praising God is the only thing we can do for God irrespective of the circumstance we find ourselves. 2cor 4:15, 15 For all things arefor your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
Be vigilant Col 4:2 –2 Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; Finally, Paul is saying do not be afraid- See also 2 Corinthians 9:11-12, Col 4:2, Phil 4:6.
Conclusion
Dearly beloved as we have heard from Paul’s letter, we must take note that the letter is not for the brethren to repent from their sin because they have already repented and have been added to the Lord body, but it is for them to remain faithful, keep the faith and ensure that they are rooted firmly in it so that they cannot be deceived. For our friends who have not given their lives to Christ, this is yet another opportunity for you to do so and to start walking in Him. Col 2:8
8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
May the good Lord continue to strengthen us as we walk in Him in Christ name Amen!
